What is a Pap Smear?

Definition

A Pap smear is a procedure that involves collecting cells from the cervix for testing. It is also known as a Pap test or a cervical smear.

Purpose

The Pap smear is a screening test for cervical cancer. It checks for abnormal cells in the cervix that may be cancerous or have the potential to develop into cancer. Early detection through a Pap test can help prevent precancerous cells from progressing to cancer.

Who Should Get a Pap Smear?

Women between the ages of 21 and 65 who have a cervix should get a Pap smear every 3 years. It can be done along with an HPV test during a pelvic exam as part of cervical cancer screening.
