Early Life and Education

Samuel Alito Jr. was born on April 1, 1950, in Trenton, New Jersey. He attended Princeton University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history, and then Yale Law School, where he graduated with a Juris Doctor degree in 1975.

Legal Career

After law school, Alito served as a law clerk for Judge Leonard Garth of the Third Circuit Court of Appeals and then for Supreme Court Justice Byron White. He then worked as an attorney in private practice and as an assistant to the Solicitor General in the Reagan Administration.

Federal Judicial Service

In 1990, President George H.W. Bush nominated Alito to the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, where he served until his confirmation to the Supreme Court in 2006.

Supreme Court Justice
